Other Details to Note

The home stays cozy with great heating during the winter months. In the spring and summer, opening all the windows invites a fantastic breeze, keeping things comfortable. While there isn’t central cooling, the abundant shade helps maintain a pleasant temperature. Parking: The driveway is a shared driveway for this cabin and the cabin below. It is very important that you park either on the road or on the cement parking spot below the cabin. Do not park on the dirt at all. This home is not 10 minutes from the entrance of the Sequoia National Forest. We are 45 minutes from the Trail of 100 Giants. Seasonal Power Safety Shutoffs During the summer months, our mountain community may experience Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) issued by Southern California Edison (SCE). These temporary outages may occur during periods of high winds, low humidity, and elevated wildfire danger to help reduce the risk of wildfires. While power shutoffs are not common, they are possible during your stay and are beyond our control. If a PSPS event is expected, we will do our best to notify you as soon as we receive updates. Cell phone service may also become limited or intermittent if nearby cellular towers lose power or become congested. Cable and internet providers may experience service interruptions as well. We recommend bringing portable battery packs to keep phones and other essential devices charged, especially during the summer wildfire season. These precautionary shutoffs are implemented by Southern California Edison to help protect lives, property, and the surrounding Kern River Valley from catastrophic wildfires. We appreciate your understanding, as these events are outside of our control but play an important role in keeping our community safe.

Neighborhood

Alta Sierra, located in Kern County, California, is a small mountain community nestled in the Sequoia National Forest. Sitting at an elevation of around 5,700 feet, it offers a peaceful, forested retreat with tall pines, crisp mountain air, and seasonal snowfall. It is a popular destination for those seeking outdoor recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, and winter activities like skiing and snowboarding at the nearby Alta Sierra Ski Resort. The neighborhood has a mix of full-time residents and vacation homeowners, drawn to its secluded, nature-filled setting. Despite its tranquility, it's only about a 15-minute drive from Wofford Heights and 20 minutes from Lake Isabella, providing access to shopping, dining, and water recreation. The area is also a short drive from Kernville, known for its white-water rafting on the Kern River. Alta Sierra is ideal for those looking for a quiet mountain lifestyle, whether as a weekend getaway or a permanent residence. However, winter conditions can be challenging, with occasional road closures due to snow. Residents and visitors should be prepared for mountain driving and winter weather.

Getting around Alta Sierra requires a car, as there is no public transportation in the area. The main access road, Highway 155 (Evans Road), connects Alta Sierra to Wofford Heights, Lake Isabella, and Kernville. This winding mountain road offers beautiful views but can be steep and curvy, requiring careful driving, especially in winter when snow and ice can make travel hazardous. Winter Travel: During the colder months, chains or four-wheel drive may be necessary, as snowfall can be significant. Road closures are possible, so checking weather conditions before traveling is advised. Nearby Towns & Amenities: Wofford Heights (15 min drive): Nearest small town for basic amenities, groceries, and gas. Lake Isabella (20-25 min drive): Larger town with more services, including restaurants, supermarkets, and medical facilities. Kernville (25-30 min drive): A charming town with shops, breweries, and outdoor outfitters for rafting, hiking, and camping supplies. While Alta Sierra itself is remote and peaceful, access to essential services and recreation is relatively easy with a short drive down the mountain. However, visitors should always plan ahead, especially in winter.
